Today I wanted to share a clean/hypoallergenic perfume line for anyone who’s on the hunt for a good option.
I started looking for a clean perfume because my son seemed bothered whenever I wore my old/traditional perfumes around him. Especially in his first year, whenever I wore any perfume (which wasn’t often) I could tell he wasn’t comfortable. I just didn’t feel right wearing it around him … so I ended up giving up wearing perfume altogether.
A few months ago, I started looking for an alternative – something that wouldn’t bother my son, that wouldn’t be overpowering in our house (especially since we’re pretty cooped up inside this winter) and something with cleaner ingredients because in general I’m trying to use better ingredients my skin… and I found something that fits the bill!
It’s Sklyar.
I got their perfume sampler from Sephora as a Christmas gift and have been trying out their 6-scents since then, and I’ve landed on my favorites.
They’ve gotten lots of good buzz in different publications like Allure, Glamour, Marie Claire, and was named 2020’s Best Fragrance Subscription Box For Women by Forbes among other praise that you can check out here if you’re interested: https://skylar.com/blogs/press.
I was also excited to try it because it’s owned by Kat Chen, and I really love being able to support women-owned businesses when I can. She was formerly VP of Operations at the Honest Company (Jessica Alba’s natural baby and beauty company) and started Skylar because she loved perfume but discovered her daughter was allergic to ingredients in her perfume, so she decided to make her own line that used clean ingredients and was hypoallergenic.
I was sold on testing out the perfume based on all of that plus the good press they’d gotten, so I was excited to try it!
Out of the 6-scent palette, I’d say that I really liked Capri & Coral the most. Also, I liked how the perfume lasted on me – I’d spray my wrist twice in the morning and could still smell the scent on my wrists at the end of the day. I also like that the scents are relatively subtle, but that you can layer them or do a few other things to add more oomph. (More on that below.)
I think that’s the only thing I noticed was slightly different about this perfume line – the scents are a bit more subtle than traditional perfumes (which depending on your preference could be great or not so great) – but I found a few tips on their website to help with this if you’re hoping to make it a little stronger and last longer. According to their website FAQ’s “Skylar fragrances are lighter than conventional fragrances, because we don’t use harmful chemicals that can extend the wear of the scents (like phthalates, which are also hormone disruptors).” They give a few options for helping the scents wear better/longer, depending on your preference, including spraying it on your clothes, spraying some on your fingers and running them lightly through your hair (after some of the alcohol has evaporated), and/or layering different scents together.
I tried layering Isle and Coral and liked that combo. Also, I was surprised that I liked Capri most of all – I don’t usually like citrus scents in perfume… but this one’s different. It’s light and sweet and fresh.
All in all, this experiment was a win for me! I’m excited I found a clean perfume line that I like and that I feel totally comfortable wearing around my son. They also have some more scents and rollies on their website that I’m thinking about checking out. 😉
If you’re in the market for a cleaner perfume, I definitely recommend giving them a try. You can check them out at Sephora or on their website. Hope you like it if you try!
