This week I finished reading Believe IT: How to Go from Underestimated to Unstoppable (Amazon, Bookshop) by Jamie Kern Lima, the founder of IT Cosmetics – and it was so incredibly good…I had to share it as a Friday Favorite!
Lima is an incredible business woman – she founded IT Cosmetics, which grew into the largest luxury brand in the U.S. and she’s on the Forbes America’s Richest Self-Made Women list. She’s also a mom of 2, married, and has had an incredible life.
This book is a super open look at her life and how she got to where she’s at – including how she created such a successful business and personal life. She shares really openly about her personal and professional challenges – it’s an almost unbelievable story that has you rooting for her all along the way.
My favorite endorsement of the book comes from Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx: “Raw. Real. Powerful. Filled with vulnerability and grit. This book will inspire you to believe in your own power. It’s a book every woman needs!”
I loved so many stories in the book… but one of my favorites is about Carol Hamilton, who was in charge of overseeing all of L’Oréal’s luxury brands for the United States. Lima tells the story about becoming the first women in L’Oréal’s 100 year history to hold the title of CEO – and Hamilton’s support of her getting that title. It’s such a beautiful story… here’s a small snippet:
One of my greatest passions has always been championing other women. And that day, Carol sparked a new level of passion for this in me. Whenever possible I believe in bringing another woman as your plus-one. And if you don’t get a plus-one, ask for one. Bring another woman to the table. Pull up an extra seat for her. Bring her to the room where it happens, whether it’s a boardroom, a PTA meeting, or a special event. So many women don’t get to have these experiences, and sometimes they have to see what’s possible in order to dream bigger, and to believe it is possible for themselves. Proximity can be power. We each have this power in some way and we can freely give it.”
This book was released barely a month ago and it’s already become a New York Times bestseller and a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller – and I completely understand why.
Here are a few more favorites from this week:
- This chicken recipe by Feel Good Foodie looks so good! I saw her prep it during an Insta story this week and it looked so easy & yet totally different than most of my chicken recipes. Excited to try it!
- This post by Cup of Jo is a fun little collection of 15 reader comments on parenting. Such a sweet read!
- The full list of Oscar nominations was released this week. I’m excited to watch many of them, including Minari and Hillbilly Elegy. Also, excited to read that two women were nominated for best director with Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), which is a first in Oscar history.
